Evaluation

How does your media product: use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Represent particular social groups?

With our product ‘Where’s my Mr.Right?’ we wanted to create a feel good film which has most of the conventions of a romantic comedy such as the characters, we based our main character on ‘Bridget Jones’ because she is seen to be looking for love but quite depressing and we wanted to have our second character to be quite outgoing but brings the personality out on both of the characters, showing a strong friendship between the two girls. We thought we used a typical sterotype in our characters which are usually seen in romantic comedies.  We used a catchy song for our opening because it matches our genre, we picked the song ‘Two Birds’ by Regina Spektor as we thought it was a nice upbeat song which matches the opening, the lyrics of the song match the story of the film as the ‘two birds’ could be the our main character and her ‘Mr.Right’. We found a quite girly text which we liked the look of and would again match our genre, we used the colour white because it stood out on the film but we wanted the title to be brighter than the rest of the text throughout the film. We used the colour pink because it connotes love, we put the text over the images at the end to give the audience and idea of what the film is going to be revolved around and maybe who her ‘Mr.Right’ is.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

We decided to used Paramount for our institution as when we researched romantic comedies Paramount was the most popular institution that distributed the highest grossing films. We wanted to use a big institution for our film because it has distributed big successful romantic comedies they all have a big fan base and using a big institution will make our film more popular with the success of paramount and its Romantic comedies.

Who would your audience be for your media product?
Our primary audience for our film was between 15-25 aimed at women because this is the popular audience for romantic comedies and a popular age to go to the cinema. We aimed our film more for women because the film is based on two women and realtionships which a lot of women like to go and watch and enjoy going to the cinema to see these kind of films and women can relate to the story line and the characters which are shown in the film. The female audience can experience the characters situations as they might of experience it themselves as realtionships are an everyday occurance. Our film could also appeal to men which would be our secondary audience. The ending of the opening could appeal to men because of the different pictures which are shown and showing that men are just as important in our film as much as women are and the men play a huge part in the film as its all about realtionships. The male audience can also relate to the storyline with the different situations the film will show throughout just like the film appeals to the female audience.

How did you attract/address your audience?

We used different conventions in our opening scene to attract our audience to our romantic comedy. The song 'Two Birds' is very upbeat and quite girly but also contrasts between the opening scene of our main character acting quite depressed which would make the audience interested in what the film is about. The name of the song 'Two Birds' links to our storyline of the looking for love as 'Two Birds' represents two people in a realtionship and the lyrics also link to our opening of two people looking for love. But also the title of the song could also link to the two characters 'Zoey' and 'Donna' showing the friendship between them both throughout the film. We wanted to create something different at the end of our opening so the audience would know when the rest of the film is about to start, we created the collage look with different pictures of 'Zoey's' past realtionships which we thought would keep the audience thinking throughout the film of who they think she will end up with at the end of the film. The pictures show a different side to our main character as she is shown to be quite depressing and sad at the fact she doesnt think she will find love again whereas the pictures show her happy and enjoying herself, this gives the audience a view of what she might be like in the rest of film if she finds her true love. We used the colour pink for our title 'Where's My Mr Right?' because it stands out on top of the images at the end and the colour pink connotates love giving the effect that her 'Mr.Right' is in the pictures.

What have you learnt about Technologies from the process of conducting this project?

When doing the project i have learnt to use the programme better and learnt different things for this project which we didnt know how to do on the previous tasks we have done. We learnt how to do the slide transitions which we got the idea from the film 'Definatly, Maybe' opening, we liked the idea of the slide transitions showing the different events of our main character in a quicker way. When we first started making the slide transitions we would have some difficulties getting used to it aswell as remembering how to do it every time, but we soon got used to it and we came out with a great result which we were all pleased with. With the slide transitions it helped us when we had a few continuity which we didnt realise when we had re-shot this helped when we put the shot in a slide transitions making it less noticable and made the opening more successful. With the different technology it made filming and editing a lot easier and helped us make a better film than we had on other tasks when we werent used to the programme and the camera's. When learning different things throughout the project we were able to go back and make our opening film more better and proffessional which made it flow more throughout.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I have learnt from the different preliminary tasks that continuity is something we have to always be on the look out for because it makes a big difference to your film if you have continuity errors as it makes it look unproffessional. I have also learnt that you can never have too much footage from filming because it can always come in handy when you are editing and over looking the footage because you dont notice on the day of filming the errors. From previous tasks we learnt that we all have to work together to produce the best possible outcome in our work and we all did something when doing the project when editing and filming and having different ideas when researching for our film which all comes to making the final outcome. We all know from the different tasks we have done that using different camera angles make it more successful and doing lots of different shots makes it successful when editing as they all can fit in and make the film flow.
